| Primary Objectives Of The Event | Inheritance & Insurrection was conceived as an exploration of what we receive and what we choose to resist. Every individual carries inherited ideas, about identity, gender, relationships, language, and belonging, shaped by family, culture, and social structures. At the same time, there exists an impulse to question, rework, or move beyond these inheritances. The event aimed to create a space to reflect on this tension: what we unconsciously carry forward, and where we feel the need to interrupt, redefine, or insurrect. Through conversation and writing, participants were invited to examine inherited beliefs, personal memories, and learned behaviours, and to consider how these shape their understanding of self and world. At its core, Inheritance & Insurrection sought to hold both continuity and disruption together, recognizing that identity is formed not only through what we inherit, but also through what we choose to challenge. |
| Official Statement From The Organizers | Inheritance & Insurrection unfolded as a space to collectively reflect on the ideas and beliefs we carry, often without noticing. As participants engaged with personal memories, learned behaviours, and inherited narratives, the session gradually moved toward questioning what is accepted and what is resisted. The conversations and writing that emerged were not directed toward conclusions, but toward awareness, of how inheritance operates quietly, and how moments of insurrection begin at an individual level. Participants navigated this tension in their own ways, some through personal storytelling, others through abstract reflection, and some through silence. As an organizer, the intention was not to position inheritance and insurrection as opposites, but as processes that coexist. What unfolded in the room reflected this, participants acknowledging what shapes them, while also articulating the desire to redefine or move beyond it. The session ultimately became a shared inquiry into how identities are both carried forward and consciously reimagined, allowing space for reflection, questioning, and individual interpretation. |
