Primary Objectives Of The Event

WHAT: The event “What We Consume” was an exploration of the theme “The Anatomy of Fascism” which asked to look into consumption as not only the personal choice between the products we can buy and use. The session focused on the ways we engaged with various types of content, information, media, products, ideas, and narratives. We discussed the ways in which consumption shaped and formed our realities, the perceptions, the ideologies, values, beliefs, and thoughts we shared as a society.

WHY: The goal was to invite participants to a critical listening and thinking and writing about the forces that shape our daily lives, our perceptions, opinions, and decisions. Through discussions about who creates what we consume, why, and to what extent, the event aimed to raise awareness of the ways in which we got manipulated by subtle power structures in media, culture, advertising, entertainment, and popular narratives. The session left the participants with an understanding of the importance of being open-minded and critical about the information and culture we consume, exposing ourselves to alternative views and seeking out new sources.

Official Statement From The Organizers

By creating “What We Consume”, we want to provide the platform for the participants to reflect on what they experience and consume daily. Within the global topic “The Anatomy of Fascism”, we have explored the impact of information, media, advertising, entertainment, cultural narratives, and ideas on a personal level, trying to identify mechanisms that make us think the way we do.

Through consumption, we let ourselves be influenced by external factors, and often, the influence is not deliberate or conscious. We propose to question the impact consumption has on the individual and collective psyche and invite participants to explore the relationship between power and dependency, dominance and compliance, propaganda and resistance.
